How did you feel 2 days after wisdom teeth extraction?!

Question: How did you feel 2 days after wisdom teeth extraction?
I had 4 wisdom teeth pulled friday morning, it's now Sunday evening. The 2 bottom teeth were impacted, my left bottom one had small infection and right bottom one was inverted and buried in bone. I had laughing gas and the regular shots, I felt the last one (bottom right) when he tried to drill it out. He stopped and gave me more shots.
Now my face is massively swollen, and I can hardly open my mouth. I used ice packs the first 24 hours, and now I am trying heat. I have been rinsing every few hours with warm salt water, eating jello, pudding, soup...however my lower lip and part of my chin are still numb. And when I look in my mouth I see this white/yellow spongy stuff around my bottom left tooth, and it goes on the side of my cheek too! It wont rinse out, and it looks gross!! I am taking penicillin and vicodin, and not using straws. What is that white/yellow stuff?? When did you feel better after getting teeth out? When did you eat a hamburger or steak? Please help!!!!!

It's best to leave that white stuff alone......it is healthy tissue and part of the clot in your socket that helps you heal. It looks like food, so some people try to rinse it out. It will look like a piece of mushroom (whitish or gray in color). If you rinse it away, you will only delay your healing process. Sometimes it can have a strange odor. Continue to "lightly" rinse w/ salt water 4 - 5 times a day. Don't aggressively rinse for the next couple days. Continue to eat soft food like yogurt, scrambled eggs, warm (not hot) soup, and smoothies for the next several days. If you try to eat solid foods too soon, you'll end up delaying the healing process. I know it's hard to not eat other food because you are SO HUNGRY, but really, it's best to stick w/ soft food for the first 4 - 5 days. Take a multi-vitamin and extra B and C vitamins for the next several weeks. I also recommend ibuprofen to keep the swelling down. I was prescribed some potent painkiller (oxycodone) in the beginning. I found that ibuprofen helped more than the oxycodone. The oxycodone upset my stomach if I didn't take it with food and really made be drowsy.

Your oral surgeon may have given you a syringe to clean out the holes in the back of your mouth. Don't use it at all for the first week. After one week, you can use it, but be very careful not to spray water directly in the hole. This will disturb the clotting process. Try to spray close to the hole, but not directly in it. Continue to rinse with salt water for the next couple of weeks. I aggressively rinsed one socket out and developed a dry socket, so be very careful not to do this!

The numbness should go away within the next several days or several weeks. It took me nearly 4 weeks for the numbness to go away completely. If you had a difficult extraction, you will probably experience this for at least 2 - 3 weeks. Don't be too concerned with it unless you have absolutely no sensation at all in your chin, lower lip, and gum area. If you feel nothing, contact your dentist right away.

Your socket should close up within 3 - 4 weeks. One of my sockets never developed the "big, black hole" because my stitches stayed closed the whole time. Unfortunately, the other side did not. That side caused me a lot of problems. I had a dry socket develop about 4 days after the extraction. I was so worried about keeping it clean and food getting trapped in there. You get use to cleaning your mouth out and it just becomes another chore you do. You should be fully healed in about a month (some people may heal a little sooner if it was an easy extraction - mine was not).

Brush the rest of your teeth carefully. Continue to floss if you can. This is not a fun experience to go through for a/one, but you should be back to normal soon. Just let your body heal the way it's suppose to, but try to keep you mouth clean with warm, salt water rinses.

Another piece of advise....get yourself a small blender and learn to make yourself healthy fruit smoothies and soups (I made homemade broccoli and cheese soup - it was great!).

Also, get a small flashlight so you can keep an eye on your sockets while it heals to make sure you're not developing any infections. If you start to notice your gums getting more swollen or red, then it may be time to visit the dentist for a follow-up. Swollen gums are normal though during the first several days after the extraction.

Any kind of pain you experience should go away within the first week. If it gets worse after a couple days, then you probably have dry sockets. I had a dull pain that last for 2 weeks because my jawbone was cut into to extract my teeth. By the 3rd week, most of that dull pain is gone. I still take ibuprofen every day though, but after 3 weeks, I only need to take one in the morning and one at night.

Good luck!

Wisdom teeth taken out 3 weeks ago

Contact your regular doctor, AND the dentist.
You may have an infection.
After 48-72 hours, swelling should be minimized, pain should be almost nothing, and you should be able to start normal eating again.

wisdom teeth out at 23, 2 day recovery, allergic to painkillers
