Why is my orthodontist going to cut my gums when he takes off my braces?!

Question: Why is my orthodontist going to cut my gums when he takes off my braces?
He said he has to cut my gums around the teeth at the top of my mouth to stop them from shifting back to their original position. I don't understand why - I've never heard of this happening before. And can't he just give me a retainer, or will he be doing this as well.

I can't stand getting stuff done at the dentist and I don't feel comfortable with him poking at my gums with something sharp. I wouldn't feel comfortable with anybody doing that. And sure, he's going to numb my mouth but that means injections. I'm usually all good with needles, but just not when they're being stuck in my mouth.

Is it really necessary? I just don't see how my gums can be such a big problem that I have to get them cut up.

This is just my thinking, but..

I remember my orthodontist would always get onto me about keeping my gums up because they were pretty far down on my teeth. Maybe because the inflammation is so bad, it would continue to move your teeth after your braces are taken off, so he wants to cut them back and get rid of the inflammation that would possibly move your teeth again.

hmm.... the only reason i might know(im no dentist) is that you could have gum inflamation where he has to cut your gums to make them go down?
