Does getting a filling hurt much (If at all) and roughly how long does it last?!

Question: Does getting a filling hurt much (If at all) and roughly how long does it last?
I'm having a filling done on friday the 18th and I'm really nervous. The last time I had an injection was in my arm when I was about 4, and I remember that hurting like hell. I've got to have some decay on a back tooth drilled off but I'm just worried about any pain.

Hello
getting a filling does not hurt. The injection will only sting for about 3-4 seconds tops. Nip your forearm for 4 seconds and that is how much it may hurt at most. Depending on how deep and big your filling is depends on how long it takes. But most normal fillings can take around 20 to 30 minutes. And 10 minutes of that is waiting for the injection to kick in and numb you up nicely.

First of all you will be injected. The injection will sting for a few seconds and then your mouth in the area of the tooth( that needs filling( one side normally) will start going numb. You will feel your lips and tongue going numb. The dentist will also check you are properly numb before starting the filling. He will then drill away the decay and clean up the tooth ready to fill. You will not feel anything at all. Just hear the drill. This will not last very long. 2-5 minutes max. They will then fill your tooth with a tooth coloured filling( or maybe a silver coloured one ). You will feel the dentist pushing the tooth as he fills it up with the filling material. They then set the filling with a kind of gun with a blue light. None of this hurts at all. After that you rinse your mouth and are good to go home.

The numbing injection takes 2-3 hours to completely wear off and you should not eat and be very careful drinking until you have all feeling back. You do not want to bite your own tongue or lip by accident. The numb feeling feels like when you lay on your arm in bed too long and it goes to sleep. Once it has totally worn off you will be fine.

Hope that helps. Fillings do not hurt and 99% are pretty fast to do too. You will be in and out before you know it. Dentists can put on a numbing gel onto your gum too before the injection which helps with the stinging sensation . The thought and fear of the injection is much much worse than the minor pain it can cause.

I hate having injections and just shut my eyes and think of something good like a holiday when it takes place and it is over within 5 seconds max. Do not be frightened of pain as the pain is minor. I am a wimp and rate the injection pain as 3-4 out of 10 max and it is so quick, blink and you will miss it.

Maybe take your ipod and listen to music to help you relax . Tell your dentist too about anything you fear and they are there to help you and work with you and understand you. I get sedation for major dental work( Valium) but not just for fillings as they are so easy.

You will be fine.

take care

myself as I have had loads of dental work done and have dental phobia.

I am terrified of the dentist and even I will admit it doesn't hurt. The initial injection of novacaine does sting, but that's gone very quickly. Honestly, every time I get work done, I realize that I spend more time being scared of it than it takes to actually get it done.

It doesn't really hurt as long as they numb you up first. It only takes a couple of minutes with the drill. The longest amount of time spent in the chair is waiting for the Novocaine to start working.

Nah, it'll be uncomfortable, but it won't really be painful. If you're worried about pain, stop the dentist when it gets too bad and get some Novocaine or whatever.

it depends a bit on how much decay etc a good dentist will numb the gum without it hurting very much at all and the whole thing will only take minutes.

not painful at all. i think what hurts more is the perception we have of dentists..thats what makes the whole thing painful so just relax and it will be okay.
