What can you do to help TMJ?!

Question: What can you do to help TMJ?
My doctor said that I have TMJ- I understand what it is I believe, but what can i do about it?

Answers:

TMJ/TMD is usually treated in 2 phases. Phase 1 involves reversible procedures designed to stabilize the articular disk and stop it from dislocating. Dislocation of the disk occurs whenever the teeth are together and then pops back into place when the jaw opens. An orthotic or properly designed splint will need to be worn 24/7 to keep the disk in place. Any muscle (musculoskeletal) problems can be treated with physiotherapy, if needed. After 4-6 months of no pain, no more TMJ symptoms, phase 2 can begin. Phase 2 consists of permanent changes to the teeth, bite, and position of the lower jaw to maintain the pain free and asymptomatic condition established during phase 1. The hardest thing you will have to do is to find someone who knows how to treat your condition since not all dentists know how.

In the meantime, stay away from hard to chew foods like meats, salads, etc. Do not chew gum. Apply moist heat to the side of the face as needed to relieve pain. FYI, TMJ always gets worse and never goes away.

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint.every one HAS a TMJ,he must have meant TMD temporomadibular disorder. and depending on your disorder, which u didnt explain. there can be a number of things u can do to help. try eating soft foods, take medication if there is swelling around your jaw, dont rest your head on your hands or when your laying down, keep your teeth in a slightly opened position if your jaw feels tight, you can wear a mouth guard at night if you grind your teeth.u said u seen a doctor but a dentist can also advise treatment options as well:)
