Why do my teeth feel weird when I listen to my iPod through my earbuds?!
Question: Why do my teeth feel weird when I listen to my iPod through my earbuds?
I just bought a new pair of metal earbuds because my old (plastic) ones broke. When I listen through them, my teeth and jaw aches and I feel like clenching my jaw. I never had this problem with my old earphones. I know I have an allergy to certain metals, which is why I always wear titanium glasses. Am I experiencing an allergic reaction? Any solutions?
Answers:
I’m a dentist.
The earbuds fit just inside your external auditory meatus -- better known as your ‘ear canal’. Just in front of your ear canals lie your temporomandibular joints (also known as your TMJs).
Anything that can irritate your ear canal can make your TMJs feel sore. Certainly, people who have TMJ problems often complain of ear pain, and vice-versa.
The solution? Wear different earphones or don’t wear your earbuds for long periods of time.
