should I get a second opinion before getting a tooth pulled?!

Question: Should I get a second opinion before getting a tooth pulled?
I have gone to a dentist in regards to a tooth ache. After taking ex-rays and looking at it for about a min. he told me that it would either need a root canal, lowering of the gum, build up of the tooth and a cap. Which would cost about 4 thousand dollars. Or just get it pulled. It is the front molar and is only visible when I open my mouth to talk or eat. He leaned more toward getting it pulled and said that later I could have an implant inserted or a bridge. He said that fixing it there was no grantees of it lasting or that it would work out in the process. the tooth and the side of my face have stopped hurting and i have been eating on it without pain this past day.
I have an appointment to have it pulled in eight hours and I'm not excited about doing it. Where its not hurting should I get a second opinion about this #30 tooth. I have good insurance and a grand I c an spend if needed.

If you've ever had this done whats up with cutting the gum down?

Answers:

Get a copy of the xray and have a second opinion.

Cutting the gum down: If too much of the tooth has to be prepped for a crown the gum will need to be lowered so that a crown will fit better.

Personally I think it always preferable to try to save a tooth, even if you have to have a crown. And with a root canal you should have the crown as the tooth will become brittle and break easily without the crown. I had a root canal, one tooth further back than yours, done about 1976 with a crown. I still have the tooth and the crown. I have never regretted it, as the tooth was hurting and had hurt for a number of years before we could actually see the damage causing the discomfort.

The cost of one implant with crown can reach close to the $4,000.00 quoted to you, and will not be covered by most dental insurances. Implants do not always succeed and you still wind up with a bridge instead anyway. Which means two teeth must be prepped and you have the cost equal to three crowns.

You should get a second opinion, otherwise you'll always be second guessing it. He's right on there not being any guarantees, but that doesn't stop other dentist from trying to save teeth, so ? I think what you'll spend for a second opinion, will be well worth the piece of mind, either way it goes.
