question about brushing too hard?!

Question: Question about brushing too hard?
can regular brushing actually prevent tartar buildup? because i am told by dentists that i brush too hard, and i still have some tartar on my teeth.

i wonder if i don't brush so hard as now, will my tartar buildup increase?

Answers:

Yes you can brush too hard. Brushing too hard pushes the gum tissue back or down exposing sensitive dentin area on the teeth which is a very sensitive area on the teeth. The reason you are still getting tartar on your teeth is because you are missing those areas. It is not from brushing too light. Also flossing at least once a day helps tremendously. Below is a link to the American Dental Hygienists Association. It shows you proper brushing techniques. There is also a Flossing technique link. Always used a soft toothbrush. Believe me all the others that have answered before me saying the harder the better or people who recommend to use anything but a soft toothbrush are completely without knowledgeable and will get you in a mess with your teeth and gums.

I have worked in Dental Hygiene for over 26 years and have had people listen to me and others have not. I have provided you with lots of links to look at. After you look at them...make your own educated decision. But try brushing using the techniques taught in the link provided and floss as well...for a month. Get the tartar off by a professional hygienist...that is the only one who can get it off...then...take care of your smile...it is one of your best attributes. Wish you the best.

If you brush too hard you can wear away your enamel. The best way to reduce the amount of tarter in your mouth is with more frequent professional cleanings. Some people just produce more calcium in their saliva which causes tarter or calculus build up usually behind the lower front teeth. Be sure to floss and brush wel,l right before you go to bed at night. That is the most important time to clean your mouth the best as we do not salivate as much during sleep which can cause tooth decay, periodontal disease and calculus build up.

I'm a Houston dentist, 25 yr. practice.

I brush hard too.
I don't think that brushing too hard is bad for you. As long as you don't constantly rip open your gums, and they don't bleed a lot. But I would think that brushin hard is good for your teeth, gets them cleaner. Call me OCD but I like clean teeth:)

the tartar will not go, but to avoid more build up do the following
don't brush so hard.
use mouthwash.
floss 3x a week.
avoid sugary foods - especially fizzy drinks.
if necessary, eat sugary foods (only) durings meals.
use fluoride based oral products.

Try to brush in a circular motion in your mouth especially along your gums. You don't have to brush hard to get the tartar off, it's all in the technic.

talk to dentist. but yet its possible to brush to hard. just brush more thourghally than hard.

The harder the better
