Post and crown question, help!?!

Question: Post and crown question, help!?
My front tooth had a root canal performed on it about 10 years ago. its turned a gray color lately and it started to hurt so I went into dentist. He said the root canal was successful but needed a crown or it would need to be extracted. Went in today and he put in a post, then gave me a whitening kit to use at home on that front tooth for a week, and then next week I go in for a temporary crown.

Any idea why I need a bleaching kit for my front tooth that has had a root canal? I thought with a crown they basically saw it down to a stub, so why bleach my front tooth? he was saying something about if we dont atleast bleach it or attempt to, you will be able to almost see through the crown and see the black, as my filling from the last root canal had turned black?

Does this make any sense? i thought a root canal tooth couldnt be bleached..

Answers:

First of all, all root canal teeth eventually turn dark. It sounds like you dentist is making you an “all ceramic crown”. In that case it is best to whiten your natural tooth first. All ceramic crowns look a lot more natural than the crowns made with a metal core and porcelain covering that metal. It sounds to me like you have a very good dentist.

I'm a Houston dentist, 25 yr. practice.

None of my root canals have been bleached.
Even the ones that had fillings first.
I cant see anything through mine.

Thats really weird.
