Under bite problems....?!

Question: Under bite problems....?
So... i'm 14 turning 15 in June. I went to the dentist about eight months ago (I know. I need another appointment >.<) and they said that I have an under bite and I need my jaw broken and I would have to wear head gear.... or i'd have to get surgery or something...Now I know why I chew with my tongue sometimes(Not in like a cow-like manner...people at school actually think it's cute -.-) I know it would be expensive for this process because I did some research but I just want to know if it will hurt a lot, would I have to wear head gear during school time, and if I could possibly go through this process now?

PS: People point out my jaw a lot and say my chin is pointy and it sticks out... it's really annoying and kinda self esteem lowering. Currently my friend has the same problem and I am a girl and he is a guy so he tried to comfort me because I was panicking @.@ Could you also tell me if an under bite occurs often in the population....?

Thanks for everyone's help ^-^

Alright. To answer your question about breaking your jaw, yes they do do that when you have orthodontic surgery. They break it on either side, remove section of bone and then put the jaw back in so the maxilla will cover the mandible. In your case however, you caught it early enough that if the doctor says wear head gear, that means he will put a plate on the roof of your mouth with hooks that go to the head gear. Rubber bands will go on the hooks of the plate and attach to the head gear, this is used to pull the maxilla forward to close the gap of you under bite. Since you're 14 they're trying to solve the problem without surgical intervention, but there is no guarantee you won't need surgery later. The best thing you can do is listen to the dentist and go from there. You don't have to wear the head gear to school, you can wear it at night while you sleep or on weekends when you're at home.

I had the same problem, my jaw was pointed like yours, but most people who have this do. They had to widen my maxilla and then pull it out because the top was small compared to the bottom. The headgear did work about 75% but I am opting for the surgery when I turn 21. I'm 19 and I've lived with this for a while, and I know how you feel. I cried when I heard I needed surgery. If you do have surgery they put you to sleep so no worries there, but they wire your jaw shut to heal.
