First ever braces appointment soon, what to expect.?!

Question: First ever braces appointment soon, what to expect.?
Well I'm worried about getting braces for the first time, I've heard lots of stories that they exteremley hurt and it's made me jumpy so please I'd like to know the following things;
1. Do they hurt when getting put onto your teeth, and what to expect on the appointment before they apply your braces.
2. If it hurts - how long does it hurt for?
3. How long do you generally have to have braces on for?
4. How was it with braces in a personal experience.. Like did you find it difficult to be comfortable smiling etc.

Thanks.

1. For me, it hurts when they change the wire and this happens ever few months. When you first get braces, it will hurt. But after a week, it won't hurt and you won't notice they are there.
2. Around a week.
3. It depends. Ask your orthodontist. I've had it for 2 years now.
4. When I first got braces, it was tough. I couldn't eat a lot of my favourite foods. But after a week, it doesn't hurt and you will get used to it. At first, brushing is hard but after a week, its just as easy without the braces. Smiling wasn't a problem. Don't worry, braces aren't as bad as they seem.

I hesitate to answer this questions because the only "fun" thing about getting braces is getting them off. Getting them on is time consuming getting the molds made and holding your mouth open for long periods of time. It will hurt when they tighten them, usually once a month or so. They have to do this to move them into place where they should be. You will be sore, it will hurt to chew for a couple of days. Also, you need to get some brace wax. You can get it in the toothpaste isle. You can use this as "padding" between your braces and the inside of you mouth. Your mouth will eventually toughen up and develop callus-like scar tissue, but until then it's going to feel like you're chewing on razor blades. This being said, it's all worth it in the end! The day you get your braces off, you will be so proud you won't be able to stop smiling and showing off that new grin!

2 years of wearing braces.

1. At first they don't hurt, but the next few days they hurt like hell. It might be easier to just not eat.
2. I think I answered this in number one accidentally.
3. A good standard would be 2 years. However, some people can have it up to four years, but this is usually because the dentist messed up. Sometimes though, you can get it off early like my brother, who got it off 6 months earlier.
4. Most of the time I forgot I had braces. Many people get braces so they really can't make fun of you. People are actually sympathetic surprisingly.

Unfortuneately, what you heard about braces is generally true. In short, they're an effing *****.

You'll get metal **** round your teeth you won't enjoy it.

1. they don't hurt when being put on your teeth, or for a few hours after they go on. in the appointment before you get them put on i think they make molds of your teeth, but i can't really remember...

2. it hurts for a few weeks after they put them on. it will hurt to chew even soft things like bananas and they'll throb for a while. the boxes will also cut open your lips, but you can put on wax to help stop that. they also hurt when they tighten the wire (every few months) or add springs to create a space.

3. i had mine for 2 years and then a retainer for 2 years. that was shorter than most people. i have some friends who had braces for 5 years. depends on your teeth.

4. i enjoyed having them. not sure why, but i did. so many people have them these days, they don't even make you stand out. some people didn't even notice i had braces for a few weeks XD. once you get used to them, you don't even notice them anymore ( plus you get to choose your colors for them).

edit: oh i also chewed gum with mine and had no problems. when they gave me elastics, i only wore them at night instead of 24 hours a day and it made no difference XD. i also eat my apples sliced, to this day, even though i don't have braces anymore.

you don't need to be worried. i was and it was a waste of time!
1. they don't hurt getting put on until the orthodontist tightens them when it pinches for just a second. on the appointment before, an impression will be made of your teeth. the thing you have to bite into tastes pretty horrible.
2. it hurts about 30 minutes after your braces have been put on, but you'll get used to it in about 4 hours.
3. on average, people wear braces for 12 months but it could be 6 months if your teeth aren't that bad or 18 if they're worse
4. braces aren't that much of a problem except you've got to be careful what you eat in public or just always have a drink to rinse your mouth. i only gave small smiles with my braces on but it's up to you
