Is the pain going to go away?!

Question: Is the pain going to go away?
I recently had a root canal & a crown placed over it, it's been 3 months & it still hurts. It subsides during the day but when I wake up in the morning it's unbearable, and some nights it keeps me awake. I've been to back to the dentist twice & he said it's normal. I went to a different dentist today for a second opinion & he said he didn't see anything wrong & has no idea what could be causing my pain. Help?

Answers:

When a cap or crown is placed over a tooth where a root canal had been done, the tooth actually becomes somewhat of an air pocket. Air gets trapped underneath the crown and since your symptoms hit when you wake up it may be that air pressure has a lot to do with it. I bet it feels like your tooth is going to either explode or there is a lot of force pushing on it right? Sometimes with root canals the dentist may not get the whole infected area and the cavity can continue to spread into the roots etc. The tooth will begin to decay again because it is infected causing you pain, but it wouldn't be visible due to the cap being on top. I would advise you to look for localized gum inflammation or red gum's as this would be an early precursor of something going on underneath the crown. If you do have a cavity that came back they would either remove the tooth or do another root canal to get it all and replace the crown. If you experience any symptoms I've listed go see the dentist. Hope everything turns out well for you!

Cheers!
