Getting braces soon - advice?!?!

Question: Getting braces soon - advice?!?
I'm 12 and getting braces soon. I'm really scared! What's it like getting them put on? Does it hurt? How long does it take? What foods can I and can I not eat? Should I take a pain killer and what should I eat when I first get them? Help appreciated! Xo

I'm 13 and I got them put on 3 months ago.
Don't be frightened! You should be excited! Getting braces is a big privileged that many kids with orthodontic problems wish they could get, but can't afford. They make your teeth absolutely perfect.

I'm guessing your orthodontist has already placed spaces in your teeth?
if he hasn't, spacers are small little blue bands that look a lot like blue tac (in my opinion).
He places them to space your very back tooth from the others, so that the silver band ring, wires etc can fit through.
Anyway, putting them on takes roughly an hour for the upper jaw, and another hour for the lower jaw.
Some orthodontists put both sets on at the same time, others don't for
The time really does fly buy.
He measures your very back molars, too see how big the very back silver band with the hook on it needs to be, in order to fit it on to your back teeth, polishes up the teeth that will be getting brackets.
He puts the silver bands i was talking about on first, usually with a bitter tasting cement (Not too bad)
He then glues each bracket on, and then slides the arch wire through each bracket.
You can then pick your colour bands, which get placed in/on the brackets.

It hurts chewing for the first 2 days or so.
Be careful not to hit your top teeth to hard on your bottoms when chewing.
They eventually settle after a couple of days, and then you wont even remember there in there, doing what they need to be, making your smile pretty.

What you can and can not eat vary's from orthodontist to another.
I'm allowed to eat anything, as long it isn't hard enough to break the braces.
An example would be an apple, i would have to cut it up in tiny bits, rather than bitting straight into it.
Just hard stuff like that.
But your orthodontist will tell you what you are and are not alowd to eat, i recommend you take his advice.

Take pain killer if you really have to, but try to do without it, too much pain killer pills can cause health problems, especially for the liver, I here.
When you first get them, eat something soft/slopy eg: mash.

After all this you will get a retainer! but you should post another question about that, I might bore you, its pretty simple.
I'm sure your orthodontist will explain all this :) you wasted 5 points.
But at least you have an idea of what's going to happen.

Don't worry about the pain, once again, its not that bad.

you should go to doctors immediately.
