Root canal treatment....painful?!

Question: Root canal treatment....painful?
Hi,I have been told this morning by my dentist, one of my teeth that is crowned, has a small infection and will therefore need root canal treatment performed.
I have spent this afternoon researching on the internet as to what happens, and I have come across nothing but horror stories.
If you have had a root canal, please inform me as to whether you experienced any pain during the procedure, and how you felt afterwards
Thank you for taking the time to answer.

I have had several root canals done to prep teeth for crowns and caps, due to a genetic problem involving my tooth enamel. As a matter of fact, none of them has been any worse than getting a regular filling done. It just takes a little longer, if you ask me. You get a shot to numb the tooth just like always. After that, it's a different procedure for the dentist- not you. I think the horror stories are because most root canals are done for folks with serious dental problems like an abscess, which could and would affect how well and easy it is to numb the tooth. If you have an abscess, and it's bad, then you've got a lot of stuff irritated to start with. But if you aren't having any pain or misery at the moment, chances are good that you can have it done and not be any worse off than you would be with a regular filling. I had four done in one go, and then went back to work afterward. Didn't miss a beat, and didn't have any problems at all- aside from the mush mouth while it was all numb. So I shouldn't think you'd be looking at any major trouble either.

I had my first root canal procedure done a few days ago after getting an X-Ray that showed i had inflamed & infected nerves, roots, pulp etc (the whole tooth inside).

As mine, i don't think yours is an Absess just yet but it has potential to become one! because an absess means the nerves are dead while full of dead neutrophills (dead white blood cells that create pus).

I had local anasthetic, but i still felt immense pain with every nerve he removed! (few seconds each).....i prefered that to any more days of unbearable dental pain....so think to urself, either this procedure, have a tooth un-nessasarily ripped out or, carry on the misary of pain and infection which WILL turn into an absess without the intervention of a dentist & antibiotics (Amoxicillin)

Meee (i had a root canal a few days ago) & spoke to the dentist about it

First of all, if you have an abscess (infection) the nerve is already dead. You need antibiotics to clear the infection. Then your dentist should give you a local anaesthetic (injection) to numb the area. You should feel pressure and movement but NO pain. After the treatment has been carried out the area may be sore for a few hours and uncomfortable for a few days. Nothing that over the counter pain killers can't deal with.

Your whole experience depends on how competent your dentist is I'm afraid.

I've had 2 root canal treatments, and while not the most pleasant thing in the world, certainly not horrendous. As long as the anaesthetic has worked, the main problem is the amount of time spent with your mouth open! My jaw ached a little but apart from that I was fine. Try not to worry about it too much, as anxiety can make things worse.

DO YOU REALLY NEED ONE? AND DO YOU ALSO KNOW THAT IT WON'T LAST FOREVER?
