TMJ question, if one has done everything that there is for this....?!

Question: TMJ question, if one has done everything that there is for this....?
like warm compresses, eating soft foods, not chewing gum, wearing mouth guard at night and the symptoms have not improved at all...could that mean that maybe the jaw is out of line? or something else?

Answers:

To self diagnose TMJ, stick your pinkies into your ear canals with the soft part facing forward and open and close your mouth. If you feel clicking and popping, then you have TMJ. If you hear noises when you open and close, then you have TMJ. Normal TM joints do not make noise when they function.

TMJ never goes away, never gets better, and always gets worse over time. TMJ is also something that needs to be fixed to correct it so just doing all the things you have been doing does not correct a thing - it remains broke. When you have TMJ, it usually means that the articular disk is dislocating whenever your teeth come together and then goes back into place when you open. Something will need to be done to your bite, teeth, and jaw position to stop this dislocation of the disk. All the things that you have been doing just relieves the symptoms of TMJ and does nothing to "cure" it. TMJ does go away with palliative measures, it must be fixed by making permanent changes to the jaw and teeth.

I have had TMJ for about 30 years - fortunately no pain - or just a little a few times a year.

My understanding is that when I close my mouth, the jaw goes out of joint. When I open my mouth, it pops back into place.

30 years ago when my jaw first started popping, my dentist did what he called an equilibrium. He would use marking paper to see what teeth touched first, then shave off that area until my teeth all touched at the same time. I would do this once a week for a month or two. I could feel my jaw shift, but it did not solve the popping problem. He then sent me to a specialist.

The specialist did a bunch of x-rays, took measurements, made me a mouth piece to wear at night, and told me I could have surgery then, before damage was done, or could wait, until they learned more about what they were doing, before having surgery. I'm still waiting since I have no pain.

Without surgery, I doubt you will solve your TMJ problem. I don't know how successful/risky surgery is now. Good luck.

DID THE DENTIST MAKE YOU AN NTI BRUXISM APPLIANCE MANY OF MY TMJ PATIENTS LOVE IT AND HAVE MO SYMPTOMS NOW
TMJD IS DUE TO BRUXISM
