Do I have a dry socket?!

Question: Do I have a dry socket?
I got my wisdom teeth removed 9 days ago. I went for my checkup yesterday and the dentist said everything looked good and I should just keep doing what I've been doing such as cleaning the sockets out with a syringe, rinsing with medicated mouth wash etc. I even was able to eat a sandwich without any pain today, and it was the first day I've gone without taking ibuprofen because I was pretty much pain free. Then tonight I was rinsing the holes out with water and my syringe and when I spit the water out it was completely red. I looked in the mirror and the bottom right socket is bleeding a lot. I don't know what to do! I thought the blood clot was supposed to stay in place by now! Did I dislodge it?! Argh, please help, it's starting to hurt and my dentist isn't open until monday!
What should I do???!?!

Answers:

The clot gains about 90% strength in the first 24 hours and yours must be pretty stable in 9 days.
Perhaps you pushed in the water just too hard and caused a little damage hence the bleeding.
Typically dry socket would result in 2-3 days after the extraction but just to be on the safe side see your doctor.

I hope that by the time you read this, the socket is no longer hurting! Actually, pain is the main symptom of a dry socket. If it still hurts on Monday, get right back to the dentist.

On Sunday, maybe one of those treatments for tooth pain -- ask the pharmacist at your drug store -- would help.

I know that a dry socket is the worst! Been there and done that! I hope your pain goes away quickly!
