How can I stop sucking my thumb?!

Question: How can I stop sucking my thumb?
I am 14 years old. I have sucked my thumb all my life. It is starting to really affect my teeth and I don't even like to smile in pictures anymore. I have tried so hard to stop for 3 years now..I have had the amazing support from my mom and other family member but nothing works. We have tried legit everything. Except braces and a thumbs stopper. I want braces so bad, but my mom doesn't think they'll help me stop. She doesn't want to get them because they're expensive and she feels she'll be wasting her money. I get intense withdrawals; my mouth waters and I get really anxious, and I can't concentrate. I suck my thumb when I am nervous, bored, or before bed. Sometimes when I fall asleep with my thumb in my mouth, I wake up in the morning and my front and two bottom teeth hurt so bad that I can't even bite down. So please, please, please, help me find a solution.

Answers:

Go to your dentist and get a fence placed. It's a device that cements to the teeth and makes it so you can't get suction with the thumb. You'll quit if you have it.

edit: there are a few different designs of habit appliances. here's one http://www.johnsdental.com/articles/orth…

super easy to place and it always works

I am a dentist

put antiperspirant on your thumbs

They sell a vinegar fingernail polish that helps people sometimes. But if that doesn't your orthodontist has an appliance that can be put in behind your teeth that has spikes in it. It sounds horrible but it work and usually works within a few days. I myself work at a place and have seen this although this is our last resort this maybe what you need since you are the age you are. The vinegar fingernail polish works for younger children ages 4-8. But it is an option and if that doesn't work then the appliance is another option. Good luck. If I am sure the braces when they come off will make your teeth looks so nice I am sure.
