how long do white fillings last?!

Question: How long do white fillings last?
so two years ago i went to the dentist for the first time in about five or so..and i had eight cavities (gross i know) most of them were little ones but i had like three bigger ones

anyways.. he gave me white fillings instead of metal because he said they were better
but i read somewhere that they only last a few years then you have to get them replaced
is this true? id hate to get all these fillings replaced :(
i mostly only eat soft food, so will that help any? (like not chipping them or wearing them down)

im sure if they didnt last that long, he wouldnt have given me white ones since i had quite a few cavities
what do you think?

Well, it is difficult to say what your cavities were filled with.
There are white colored temporary filling materials but they last only about 6-8 months and then have to be replaced by amlagam restorations which are permanent.
Also, there is one permanent restoration material which is white in color or rather tooth colored. These are called Composite restorations and dont need to be replaced. GIC is another tooth colored permanent restoration material but its not used in big cavities on tooth surface which bear a lot of chewing force.
