wisdom teeth removal help!!!?!

Question: Wisdom teeth removal help!!!?
Ok, so I got my two lower wisdom teeth removed about over two weeks ago. There's a BIG problem though, hours after my surgery, i was taken to a friend's place and she was given the pills, instructions, etc. And what happens? she accidentally threw away the instructions!! that's not the worst part though, I didn't even notice! I was so drugged the first day and then there was so much stuff going on with school and taking the pills on time I had completely forgotten!!

So because the instructions were pretty much gone, I developed a dry socket. I have been this way for a little over two weeks and I've been rinsing the stuff out with syringe. My main question for people who know about dry sockets would be: Should I be taking any specific medication for the dry socket alone?? is the surgeon supposed to put anything inside it?? I'm so embarrassed and the surgeon is gone for two weeks but I'm still going to call them.

Just keep rinsing your mouth to keep infection out. A type of salt solution is best. Don't drink through straws or suck anything in any way. This will make them worse. For pain, take Tylenol. Don't take any type of aspirin because it reduces blood clotting which is bad! Aspirin also can cause extra bleeding so don't take anything but Tylenol or the prescribed pain relievers. Best thing to do is just keep rinsing and wait for your surgeon to come back. Best of luck :)

First hand experience.

When I experienced a dry socket, Ibuprofen worked best for me. I took 800mg every 8 hours (that is prescription strength). My orthodontist also gave me Vicodin to help with breakthrough pain, but honestly it just made me feel sick and didn't really help the pain all that much.

I also put ice packs on my face which helped alleviate some of the pain. Warm salt water rinses will also help the area heal faster. At this point, you should also continue using the syringe to irrigate the hole and remove any food particles stuck in there (warm water feels the best!).

If you are still experiencing great pain, the orthodontist can pack the hole with a medicated dressing which will help soothe the pain. Some people think these are wonderful, other people just think they taste bad. When I had a dry socket, I just toughed it out with the medicine, ice packs, and salt water rinses and the pain subsided after about 1 1/2 weeks.

Good Luck!
