BRACES HELP - QUESTIONS?!?!

Question: BRACES HELP - QUESTIONS?!?
I just got my braces yesterday, they surprisingly didn't and don't actually hurt that much, but I do have some questions about them which I'd love for you to answer :)

1. I can't seem to be able to bite at the moment and can only eat with the very back of my teeth without great pain - is this normal and will I soon be able to eat like normal again?

2. I know this sounds kinda gross, but I seem to have a lot more saliva building up in my mouth now, which I always have to swallow and yeah..... :/

3. Sucking (like drinking) seems to hurt and it seems as though the brace is sucking/presured against my teeth?

4. I have gained a small brown stain on the edge of my front tooth, how am I supposed to clean it with braces on?

5. Kind of a bonus question: I basically just have some smallish gaps at the front, my bottom and back teeth are almost perfect anyway but I also have a slightly wonky tooth at the front too so how long do you reckon I'll have to have my braces on to cure this?

Sorry that was a lot but thanks for the help in advance :)

Answers:

I can try and answer a couple questions for you, I've had braces 3 times for a total of over 7 years.

1) It is very common for your bite to change after getting the braces adjusted at the orthodontists office. Your bite can change, causing it to feel like you have to chew weird, and it can be pretty painful. As time goes on, it won't hurt as bad. Eating soft foods for the first couple days after getting your braces will really help. Other than that, just give it a couple days, and it'll get to the point where it doesn't feel as sore.

2) The saliva builds up between your teeth and braces. Sucking in with your mouth will help get rid of the excess saliva. Also might benefit you to carry a water bottle around, and when your mouth feels gross you can swish water around in your mouth to help it feel fresher.

3) I'm not surprised that sucking hurts. When you get your braces adjusted, your teeth are extra sensitive and every feeling is exaggerated. Just avoid doing whatever hurts when and where you can, and give your teeth a rest. There's nothing you can really do to help the pain at this point, so just be gentle with them, eat soft foods, and avoid doing anything that makes them ache. Good news is is that the pain is not permanent, and will eventually go away. But to me, it's all worth the pain to have perfect teeth afterwords.

4) Not sure about the stain, have you tried brushing or scraping it off? Most likely not a huge concern, and can be addressed at your next visit to the dentist or orthodontist.

5) It's hard to know how long you will have braces, because each orthodontist is different and has different methods. But usually just to move some teeth around will take about a year, and will take a little longer, depending on what other problems your orthodontist wants to adjust. Don't take my word for it, but from the sounds of it, I'd guess that you will have braces for about... 14-18 months...?

Good luck!

Annie you need to be strong coz you are going to be like that for a little while so try pretending that you have bubble gum and it gets better
