How long does it take for a tooth to Decay? Should I see another Dentist? Did he!

Question: How long does it take for a tooth to Decay? Should I see another Dentist? Did he screw up?
I went to the dentist about 6 months ago. He cleaned out the tooth with no decay to my knowledge afterward. He places a temporary filling into the hole and I was to return for a cap / crown. He did say to come back in about a month after my insurance was accepted. I switched jobs and had to wait a little longer. My teeth did not have an issue nor was I in pain. My new insurance kicked in after 6 months and I was fully covered to have the work done. Great I thought until I went to see him and he said that the decay has went into the tooth and it's not salvageable. Really? After 6 months? Tooth feels fine, there is plenty of tooth left to put the cap on it but the decay is now inside he said. It seems to be he didn't actually clean it out in the first place. Am I wrong? Opinions? (Other than the obvious that I should have went back right away!) lol

Hello
sounds like he prepared it for a crown and because you left it too long to get the crown fitted, the temp filling started leaking and decay has spread to the root canal and nerve area deep inside the tooth. Decay can spread fast and because your tooth already had a hole in it, it spread much faster than normal. Did your temp filling fall out? Did he x ray the tooth to see the decay? I would of thought he could save the tooth by doing a root canal. I have had 2 root canals on badly decayed teeth.

Or was your tooth already root canaled? Dentists normally crown root canaled teeth. Dentists only normally pull teeth out as a last resort. As you have no pain maybe the nerve and tooth has actually died. You need to go back and ask him if a root canal treatment could save the tooth.

Or did you have root canal treatment and then was you supposed to go back to have the tooth shaped for a crown? If that is the case the tooth could well be beyond saving if the roots have been damaged, fractured. Teeth that have had root canal treatment go brittle and most need protecting with crowns. I suspect your temp filling leaked as temp fillings normally only last a few weeks . You really need to ask your dentist what he orig done to the tooth and why it is now not savable. If you do have to have it pulled, you can have a dental implant to replace it.

Hope that helps and you get it sorted ok.

myself as I have had root canals and fillings and braces and crowns
