Wisdom teeth pain 3 days post op?!

Question: Wisdom teeth pain 3 days post op?
Three days ago I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed. Surgery went well and I have been doing all the right things to help my jaw and sockets heal (eating soft food, rinsing with warm salt water). First two days were fine- hardly any pain.

Last night, I experienced a pulsing sensation in my gums. Gradually, the throbbing turned into excruciating pain. Then I started noticing I had a sore throat. I took three Advil, iced my jaw on both sides and I felt better.

Is if it's normal to have excruciating pain three days after surgery?

What are the symptoms of a dry socket (please don't say "you'll just know")?

Answers:

Dry Socket does typically start 2-4 days after the surgery. I recently had my lower wisdom teeth out and, unfortunately, experienced a dry socket despite taking all of the precautions. My surgery was Thursday afternoon and the pain started Sunday evening.

According to the Mayo Clinic, these are the official symptoms:

1. Severe pain within a few days of tooth extraction
2. Partial or total loss of the blood clot (you may notice an empty looking socket)
3. Visible bone in the socket
4. Pain that radiates to your ear, eye, neck, etc.
5. Bad breath or a foul odor coming from your mouth
6. Unpleasant taste in your mouth
7. Swollen lymph nodes around your neck or jaw.

If the pain was temporary and easily relieved it is probably not dry socket - however, if the symptoms you mentioned continue or get worse, chances are that it is a dry socket. At that point, you can call your oral surgeon and they will be able to help you.

Personal Experience

probable dry socket. Most problems with dry sockets begin about the third day post-op, and all are on the lower jaw. The pain typically shoots up to the ear and is extreme(a 9 or 10 on the pain scale). Call your dentist to evaluate you and diagnose or rule out infection. Sometimes a packing can be placed in the socket to help stop the pain. No one know why dry sockets occur, but they are seen more often in females, smokers, and tough lower jaw extraction sites. It will heal, but see your dentist to rule out infection, then take some pain medication and lay back for a few days. Feel better.
