Why does my orthodontist say I need my tooth pulled out?!

Question: Why does my orthodontist say I need my tooth pulled out?
When I went to my orthodontist today to have my teeth worked on, I ended up having to get another Xray. According to him, one of my top front teeth needs to be extracted to "make room" for the others or something. This is NOT a baby tooth.

I believe he stated the tooth was rotated, but I don't know if he meant that one.

First, what will this end up looking like? I don't want to look like a fool missing one of his front teeth.. I might as well have never gotten braces then!

Second, how badly will this hurt? When I go to get the tooth pulled.

Answers:

I am 29 years old and currently have braces. My orthodontist had me have two teeth removed to make room for the adjustments the braces were making in my mouth. It is a common thing, and no, you won't end up with a gaping hole in your mouth. If your orthodontist knows what he is doing at all (and I'm sure he does or he wouldn't be in business), you will end up with a beautiful, straight smile.

As for the pain - I developed a dry socket after my wisdom tooth was removed and was given Vicodin for the pain. Honestly, it didn't really even help that much - just made me sick to my stomach and dizzy. Ibuprofen (I took 800mg every 8 hours) worked so much better. Yes, your mouth will be sore from the braces but the pain doesn't last long and really stronger drugs are not typically necessary.

Personal Experience

You don't want to get your mouth all crammed up. It's not irregular for someone to get one of their teeth pulled. Almost everyone have their wisdom teeth pulled for room around 21.

It won't hurt when it happens. The aftermath is a different story. Only for a couple of days will it be uncomfortable.

In response to your edit:
I'm not sure about vicodin but he will give you some kind of pain/muscle relaxer. Good luck and enjoy the laughing gas. ;)
(I'm 20 and I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out soon. iSad.)

Your dentist is well qualified and experienced, so keep faith on him. There may be such conditions that he need your teeth pull out. This is the word of technology so no need to worry about any kind of pain.

Good luck !!!
