Impressions for retainers?!

Question: Impressions for retainers?
Tomorrow I'm going to the orthodontist and I'm getting impressions for retainers on the top. I've had braces since June 2009, so it hasn't exactly been 2 years, but pretty close. What do they do for impressions and does that mean I'll get them off tomorrow or soon?

Also, I feel like there are still visible gaps in my teeth. Should I confront the orthodontist or just take his word that the top braces are ready to come off? Thanks!

Answers:

Yeah, you should get your braces off before they take the impression. They put the mold stuff onto a tray and put it into your mouth and hold it there until it's a certain consistency. It won't hurt unless the mold won't come off of your teeth (which has happened to me a few times). Yes, if you can see visible gaps in your teeth, definitely ask your orthodontist about it. You're the one paying for your braces so you should make sure that you are satisfied as well before they take them off. If they say they can't pull them any closer, then there's nothing you can do. So don't be afraid to ask :) Once they take the impression, your retainer will show up with the gaps and that's how they'll look from then on unless you get a permanent retainer between them.

Hope this helps :)

It probably depends. My orthodontist says he's going to get an impression of my teeth while I still have my braces, so you might not get them off for a few more weeks. It really just depends on what your orthodontist has decided.

Also, your teeth may not look perfectly straight when you get your braces off. That's what the first retainer is for.

I'm answering this question completely on what MY orthodontist says about his plan for me. Your orthodontist may have a different plan.

I don't think you should confront him. If your teeth aren't straight after the retainer, then I'd have a talk with him.

Impressions are when they mix alginate with water and fill it in a mouth tray for the purpose of sticking it in your mouth and finding making a mold of your teeth. I don't think that they'll take it off soon, but Im not so accurate.

If your not comfortable with the result, then TELL YOUR DENTIST...my sister went through the same thing and if she didnt' tell her orthodontist, her teeth wouldve looked tow up ;P

Dental class x)

All they do for impressions is take gooey stuff on a metal thing that goes around your teeth and hold it there till it hardens. It doesnt hurt or anything its really simple.

Ive had impressions done

It's the same thing that they did for your visit before you got your braces. Orthadontic Records
