is mouthwash such as listerine helpful or is it a waste of time?!

Question: Is mouthwash such as listerine helpful or is it a waste of time?
Answers:

Actually, it is both helpful AND a waste of time. I know this sounds strange, but let me explain.

An antiseptic mouthwash will kill germs and is useful as a supplement to good brushing and flossing. The question you should ask yourself, however, is whether it is useful *enough* to be worth the extra time (a minute or two a day) and expense. For most people, the answer is no.

If you do a good job of brushing (two full minutes, at least twice a day), and flossing (once a day), there is only marginal value to using an antiseptic mouthwash. In the overwhelming majority of cases, you can achieve good oral health with just brushing and flossing. So the mouthwash becomes unnecessary.

But much worse is the situation where the mouthwash serves as a substitute for the brushing and flossing. A lot of people will say, "I'm too tired to do a good job of flossing tonight. I'll just use the mouthwash instead." It doesn't work. No amount of rinsing with Listerine will make up for failing to floss or failing to brush for the full amount of time you need.

BTW, if you do decide to use Listerine or another mouthwash, keep in mind that you need to do it for a full minute. That doesn't sound like much, but believe me, it seems like forever when you are doing it. Most people just swish it around for 10 seconds or so and think they're done. But unless you use it for a full 60 seconds, it has very little value.

Just brush and floss, unless your dentist tells you that your particular situation requires you to do more. I hope this is helpful.

Has slight advantages, but main thing is the brushing and flossing technique. Any mouthwash ,without good brushing/flossing is a waste of time .
So what you should do is ask your dentist /hygienist to demonstrate correct techniques, preferably also to use a disclosing solution to show the plaque. You can google "bass technique" for some good advice

Dentist
