What is TMJ? (read the detail)?!

Question: What is TMJ? (read the detail)?
I know that a TMJ is the temporal mandibular joint, but I don't understand what people mean when they say they "have" TMJ, as if it's a jaw anomaly of some sort.

So does TMJ also refer to an abnormal condition of the jaw? What is it then? (You can use technical language to explain if you want. In fact, it would probably help me understand better.)

Answers:

You're absolutely right- TMJ is the name of the joint. Sometimes (often, really), patients with jaw problems mistake the term TMJ for the correct term TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder), hence the confusion.

Keep smiling :)
