Is it a big deal if I don't wear my retainer at night?!

Question: Is it a big deal if I don't wear my retainer at night?
I got my braces off last week and I finally got my retainer today. I have no problem with wearing it all day but now that I have to go to bed, the retainer almost give me a gagging feeling when I think about it and it just plain bugs me. If I wear my thing in the day but not at night, will my teeth shift majorly? Thank you very much for your answers.

If you can wear it all day, you can wear it all night. It's easier at night because you're asleep and not really aware of it. The shifting won't be dramatic, but wouldn't you rather your teeth set in the right position? Otherwise, what was the point of braces in the first place? As you get older, your teeth naturally shift, so if you let them shift out of alignment now, the alignment will end up that much worse then.

Still have braces on the bottom, retainer on the top

You will get used to wearing it at night, perhaps propping yourself up in bed on another pillow will help to reduce the gagging feeling. Try to remember that it is a feeling and it not actually happening.

The biggest issue is that if you have movement because of not wearing the retainer is that you are coming towards the end of your course of treatment and the NHS only funds the one course so you would have major issues with trying to put things right.

YES!!! I had braces for 4 years and hardly wore my retainer for a few months then just stopped wearing it all together and my teeth moved dramatically! I knew of somebody who didn't wear their retainer at all and ended up having to have braces put back on.. do your really want that? Wear your retainer!

They might, why take such a chance ? At least try to use it at night as much as you can.

they won't shift majorly but they will shift a little.
it's best to keep it in at night.

wear retainer.
