Why do I gnash my teeth often?!

Question: Why do I gnash my teeth often?
one time to the extent of painful swollen gums...I do it involuntarily and dont realize until half-way.

Is it associated with any deficiency?

Answers:

no deficiency. I work in dentistry and i still don't know the answer. The best theory is it is how some people release stress. The experts say it isn't hereditary but I grind, my dad grinds, and my son grinds. It could be from malocclusion or bad bite. I grind at night and clench during the day. Here is what I recommend. If you catch your self clenching or grinding during the day stick your tongue to the roof of your mouth and keep it there as much as possible. This motion makes it impossible to clench. Also, If you grind at night I recommend you get a night gurad or splint made to wear at night to keep you from grinding. Consult a dentist about the best treatment and to have your bite evaluated.
