Hello
root canal treatment should not hurt. I have had 2 and only had slight pain with the second tooth. They will x ray your teeth( which you are going to get done ) and see how bad the infection of the teeth are. They then numb your teeth with an injection and then once you are nice and numb they drill into your tooth. They then use long files to clean out your root canals and remove all signs of infection . Large back teeth can have 3 root canals or even 4. Mine had 4. Once the root canals are cleaned up they put stuff into the tooth which then kills off any remaining infection and seal the tooth with a temp filling. It will take about an hour per tooth. You should not feel hardly any pain at all or no pain.

About 2 or 3 weeks later you will go back and they check the teeth have healed properly and x ray them again to see all infection has gone. They will then either put a perm filling on but more likely crown your back teeth as they take lot's of pressure when chewing and the crowns will protect the teeth from breaking or cracking( as root canal teeth go brittle over time ). If you are going to have a crown they will shape your tooth into a peg shape and then impressions of your teeth. They will then put a temp crown on and have a perm crown made up.

About 2 weeks later you will then go back for your perm crown fitting. This is really easy and fast. Takes about 15 minutes.

If your teeth are aching bad now due to infection, throbbing etc all the time. You may be abit sore for a few days after the root canal. Anti inflammatory meds will help with that. The after pain, if any will be totally bearable. I have had 2 root canals and only my 2nd one was abit sore after for a few days and this was because it had a bad infection and was really painful and throbbing before work started on it or a HOT tooth. Having the actual work done did not hurt, so do not worry about that. They numb you up.

If you have to have the teeth pulled you are numbed up first, then you will just feel pressure and pulling and may hear some noise, but it will not hurt. The area will be sore for a few days after and they will give you pain killers and tell you how to took after the holes in your gums and make them heal ok.

So root canals are not painful and the only thing that is a pain is they take quite a long time. You have to have 2-3 appointments but it is worth saving your teeth if you do not have wisdom coming through.

Hope this helps and good luck with it.

I have had 2 root canals and 2 teeth pulled and other dental work

i had a root canal and nearly died from the intense pain.... my doctor didnt listen to me that i could still feel all the drilling and such so i demanded vicodin after.... its cheaper to just get them pulled!
