Actually, it depends on whether you're doing it under local anesthesia (numbing of the gum) or general anesthesia (sleeping).
I had all 4 pulled out under local anesthesia. At first I was afraid that it would hurt, but my dentist made the experience easy for me. First, he swipe on some anesthetic gel to slightly numb my gum in order to inject anesthetic into my gum. The needle didn't hurt and I could only feel a slight tinge of pain.

The removal of the wisdom teeth is a little more terrifying, but not painful. 3 of them were normal so he took it out quite easily. One of them was impacted so he had to use a drill to make it into bits then pull it out. I still remember feeling him tugging on the pieces and feeling a sudden pain. I had to ask him to give me more anesthetic. Then the rest was pretty easy. You can "feel" the action being done on your teeth (pulling, drilling) but you won't feel any pain, which is quite interesting. I should also mention that your lips would be numb too and it would feel soft and squishy. Try not to touch, bite or hurt it while it's still numb or else you could damage the nerve. That goes for the teeth too. When your mouth is numb, you won't feel anything so if you were to hit it hard you wouldn't know, and you might get nerve damage.

Then it comes to the recovery process: take my advice and take the painkiller as soon as you get home! I didn't because I didn't think it would be that bad. Then when the anesthetic goes away, I experienced extreme pain for hours afterward. I had to ice my face. For me, the swelling goes the away the next day but I know friends whose faces swell for days. So that depends on you.

Some helpful advices: after you're done with the removal and they put a gauze in there. Bite down for at least 30 minutes for the clot to form. To be safe, I bit down for 1 hour, changed the gauze then hold it down for another 2 hours. During this time, don't eat, brush or SPIT. It will cause your blood clot to be dislodge and you'll experience dry socket, which will be very painful. After 2 hours or so, and you feel that no more bleeding, you can start drinking/eating. I suggest drinking milk or eat yogurt; something soft that won't require biting/chewing. Then after 24 hours, if it doesn't hurt as much, you can eat smashed potato or porridge.

You should ask your dentist for a syringe with a curve end. That's for cleaning out the food stuck in the hole of your extracted tooth. Resume brushing and flossing after 3-5 days because it's very important to keep your mouth clean or else you'll get bacteria infection. It would take 6 months for your gum to completely heal, but after 1 month or so the hole will close.

I hope I give you enough info to ease your worry :)

Wow, cant compete with that essay, but I just got my wisdom teeth pulled 'bout 12 hours ago. honestly, the worst part is that my lip is numb. Im not having any pain. I really want some pizza or something but I think that might break the stitches. I got to the office with my parents, they brought me to the room, put an IV in my arm, ( the most painful part because I was all tensed up) put some magic medicine into my arm, next thing I know I wake up, feel like I have 20/1billion eyesight, they roll me out in a wheelchair to my dads car, im completely spaced out, get home with gauze in, and yeah. no pain at all yet..

i had four wisdom teeth removed in 1979. they were impacted. i had a drip sedative, and multiple pain shots. after the drip sedative, they could have drilled a hole in my head. the surgery was uneventful. the recovery was quite painful for five days. i was on tylenol with codeine. never had any issues after i recovered. i even had my teeth straightened in 1997.

I literally just got all four of mine out yesterday. The worst part for me was honestly the IV because I had never been knocked out before. But I didn't know anything haha! I slept basically the entire day yesterday, which I would recommend doing because the pain and numbness won't bother you if you're sleeping. Anyway, the numb mouth aggravated me more than anything else. My mouth has been very sore, but even yesterday I was able to eat 2 krystle burgers, pudding, and ice cream. The worst part is just having the sore mouth and jaw. However, if you have any pain, the meds they give will fix you right up. They gave me vicodin and I've been taking it since I got home yesterday. It wasn't as bad as I was thinking it would be, it's just frustrating to have your mouth being sore. Oh, also you have to take antibiotic medication. I got the liquid so I wouldn't have to swallow a pill and I have been crushing my vicodin up in food. I have stitches in 3 out of 4 places and those have been scraping my mouth a bit, but they'll dissolve soon.
