Why aren't you allowed to chew gum with braces?!

Question: Why aren't you allowed to chew gum with braces?
I remember going in for a wire change once and I was chewing the gum, the dental assistants noticed and quickly advised me to remove the gum, before my orthodontist comes back. I asked "How come? Will he get upset?" They said "Some others were chewing gum and he started yelling at them"

I don't really understand, I've only had two incidents where appliances broke and all of them had to do with him. Why aren't patients allowed to chew gum

Answers:

Because it could pull them off or get stuck in it.
Also if it is sugared gum, it is not good for your teeth in general.

i have braces and am chewing gum right now just only chew sugarfree gum
