anyone know a lot about teeth?!

Question: Anyone know a lot about teeth?
back in august i got a filling on a molar and it hurt a little bit after wards and i just let go thinking it was going to go away since i had just gotten it. but it never did and the other night i kept waking up from the pain to the point where i was in tears. and it just throbs with pain and now there is a lump right about above the same tooth on my gum, it kinda seems swollen. and if you touch where its at it feels like a giant painful bruise. is this bad? what should i do? i already went to the dentist they weren't so sure either, they just prescribed me a strong pain reliever and i'm almost out and even that barely works. so do you also know of anything to help get the pain to go away?

At first it sounded as though your filling was just a little high and might have needed a small adustment. Then it started to sound more like you have an infection of some kind. Why don't you go to another dentist and get a second opinion? What you are describing is certainly not normal and if not treated properly it could turn into something bad if it hasn't already. If it is so painful that you are in tears it seems odd that your dentist is shoving a pain killer down your throat instead of finding out what is causing the pain.

the tooth is infected and infection is in the bone and gums.
you need to get an extraction or ROOT CANAL to treat the infected tooth.
consult your dentist and start taking antibiotics to reduce the infection.
dont take hot/warm food stuffs it will increase the pain,
dont sleep on this side and dont put pressure on the tooth by keeping your hand.

Sounds like an abscess. Go to another dentist pronto. Meanwhile a hot salty mouthwash may help. Take a whole glass of hot water and stir in a teaspoon of regular salt. Use the whole glass.

If the tooth is infected the bacteria will release gas. Any amount of heat will cause the gas to expand putting pressure on the nerve. Typically this means a root canal. From my experience a root canal is the better way to go. Root canals are not horrible an extraction is much much worse. Once the dentist kills the nerve you don't feel anything. As with an extraction the tooth is ripped from the nerve and the pain can last several days. Molars are located by the largest part of the nerve branch so pain in the back of the mouth is typically greater. This is the reason for the throbbing and it can sometimes travel up to the eye.

The other benefit of a root canal is you get to keep the tooth rather than lose it.

If the filling the dentist did failed and the tooth is infected you should go to a different dentist. But you really need antibiotics because untreated, the infection can go into your heart.
