Fractured Tooth Removal?!

Question: Fractured Tooth Removal?
Hello Everyone,

I will cut a long story short, in later 2009 I went to America due to some family deaths, I had to go over to help on. When waiting for the plane to Atlanta I was having something to eat and I cracked a tooth and it was painful. When I go to my destination of Memphis I went to go see a Dentist but I could not afford the treatment, they were asking for nearly $400 to fix it.

Now I am back in England I went to see an NHS dentist today she said that the tooth is fractured and will have to be removed! Over time tooth has just rotted away. On the 20th I have to go and get it taken out but she said that nothing is going to be put in the gap and I have to just let it heal. I am not happy with that, is there nothing that can go in its place, its a rather big tooth and a big gap, my mouth will just look silly.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated,

400 dollars to fix a fractured tooth like that is cheap, and would have been saving you money in the long run.

Your mouth probably really does need time to heal, but once it has you should be able to get either a bridge, implant, or a "flipper" however expect to pay a lot more than 400 bucks for any of those.

You should review each of these options with a dentist, but here's the skinny-

Bridge- A pontic(crown) that hangs in the hole left by the extraction. Supports itself by being attached to two other crowns(abutments) on adjacent teeth. In Utah, without insurance you can expect to pay approximately 3,000 for the bridge. Buildups and other complications could raise this cost. Semipermanent fix, bridges done right and properly taken care of(six month cleanings, etc) can be expected to last as long as ten years...some last for the rest of the patients life. But much of that is dependent on homecare.

Implant- The gum is cut open and the support screws down into the jaw. A crown is placed over the implant to make it look like the tooth was never lost. Unsure of cost, as my dentist never did it. However I've heard that when all is said and done the cost in utah is seven grand. When I say upwards of seven grand I'm referring to total cost. The crown for an implant is about 1000 to 1200 in Utah. That doesn't include all of the parts to anchor it, any of the surgery to install the "anchoring" part, nitrous etc. That's why my number is so much higher than the other answer, and I'm assuming no insurance coverage because coverage and prices vary from plan to plan. Healing time can be an entire year for all surgeries involved. Fairly permanent solution, though the crown may need to be replaced if your gums recede over time, or your other teeth become discolored etc.

Flipper- plastic mold that latches on to palate/other existing teeth. Non permanent, however, if you lose other teeth they can sometimes be added depending on the flipper type. You have to be careful to clean it properly lest you cause other teeth to rot. In Utah this is usually the cheapest option, but least preferred for reasons your dentist can review with you. Depending on type of material and number of teeth it could run anywhere from 800ish to 2,000. Non permanent solution. The nice thing about a flipper is that you can easily take it out or replace it.

Again, these are options you should review with your dentist because only they can say which options would even work for your situation, and these prices are based on private healthcare. Your own system may be cheaper in the office, it's just to give you an idea of what they cost comparatively. So if she quotes you at x for the bridge, you have an idea of what the implant might be in your area.

Hello..Ok you say it's a "big" tooth so I'm going to assume it's a back molar tooth..You also didn't say if it was the last tooth back as knowing that would make a difference in suggesting what could be done to replace it.There are options...And by the way, if it was a wisdom tooth, you don't need to replace it. Good luck and I wish you well.

Well if its a back tooth no one wil see it. let it heal fully then you can replace the space with a bridge or implant. If its a front tooth, yes you can get what is called a flipper. Its like a retainer with a tooth on it to fill the space while you heal. Nothing permanent can be place until the gums have totally healed. This is because your gums will change as it heals, there is no way of knowing exactly what the gums will look like until it is fully healed. If you place a permanent restoration on it before it heals you risk having a gap between the gums and the restoration or the gums healing to high and pressure will push on the restoration. This will cause problems after you have healed. Pain or a food trap or the inability to be able to floss the food out due to no space. It is important to eventually put something in the open space after it has fully healed. If you leave a space, your remaining teeth in front and in back of this space will start to drift and tilt into the empty space, then there will be no room to replace the missing tooth.

I am not familiar with how the NHS works when it comes to restorative procedures. You can get it replaced with a bridge or implant, but you might have a significant amount you will have to pay out of pocket. Over in the States, implants can run well over $1,200.

It would be good to inform yourself on what/if NHS will pay for to replace that tooth, because if you don't replace it, not only will it look bad but it could significantly change the way your other teeth fit together.
