You really cant without an x-ray of the tooth. Pain in a tooth can be decay. If you have swelling and pain you need to go to the dentist so they can take a picture. If you have an abscess they will give you an antibiotic to take care of the infection. It is important to go to the dentist because if you do have an abscess it will got worse. You could become very sick and the infection could spread and ultimately a person CAN die from an abscessed tooth that is not taken care of.
