Having them put on doesn't really hurt one bit. It's usually the day after or a few days later when you start feeling the pain. It feels kind of like a faint bruise on your gums every time you bite down. I don't think pain killers are necessary for when they put them on, but when the pain comes it might come in handy.
They'll usually tell you or give you a list of what you can and can't eat. To be honest, the first thing I ate when I got my braces were gummy bears...which is something you can't eat haha.
You could bring your iPod probably since you'll just be laying there the whole time. It's not as bad as you think!
