Wisdom Teeth Extraction Tomorrow?!

Question: Wisdom Teeth Extraction Tomorrow?
I am getting my wisdom teeth extracted tomorrow morning. My doctor gave me 2 Valium for my dental anxiety. 1 to take tonight and one to take 1 hour before the procedure. They are going to be using IV sedation for the procedure. I have never been sedated before and would like some experiences from people who have this done.

Don't worry. I had extracted three teeth on a day. IV sedation is given for not feeling pain. NO PAIN. Please visit the web site: http://www.dentalfearcentral.org/iv_seda… This web site contains experience of persons who have done this.

Hi there I hope I can help in this query as I am a Sedation Dental Nurse in Oral Surgery which is basically wisdom teeth all day every day. Firstly you must tell the dentist/Oral surgeon that you have taken the valium, there was actually no need to take these as the IV sedation is what you have taken but straight into the vein therefore more effective. If you have ever taken sedatives in the past either recreational or not you must tell them tomorrow as having a history of valium can make the sedation less effective as it is on your system already. In the UK we use Midazolam which is of the same family as Valium, this is normally given in equal amounts of up to 10mg/5ml through the vein. The sedation effects you in several ways, it is a muscle relaxant therefore takes all of the anxiety away and stress and makes you really chilled out, it is a respiratory depressant and relaxes your breathing, your breathing is therefore monitored during the sedation, it also causes amnesia so later that day you will not remember much at all of the procedure. Please ignore the other members answer as it does NOT give you pain relief. The dentist still has to numb you up the same as you would get if you were not sedated. When you leave your surgery you will feel almost drunk and unstable of your feet but able to walk, you will be forgetful and that is why someone must keep a close eye on you for 12 hours, you are no allowed to drive or be responsible for anything or anyone. Most folk who get sedated recommend it, they love it, as it is very safe and has NO associated health risks like a GA, some females get teary like you would do if drunk, some people fall asleep and wake up not knowing that they are going home. I think you will be great and enjoy this sedation, however remember stock up on painkillers for going home and tell the dentist about your valium so he know maybe to give you more of the IV drugs. Good luck
