am I allergic to novocaine?!

Question: Am I allergic to novocaine?
when i go to the dentist they tell me i am getting a shot of novocaine to numb my teeth but when they do usuallly it was for only one cavity but my mouth would still hurt for at least a few days n there would be a lump where they gave the shot, but about 2 years ago i went in for a root canal and again they said i was getting novocaine only this time a much larger dose meaning more injections. after about 15-20 minutes i could feel everything they were doing so they gave me a little more and for about three weeks after that my mouth was in serious pain and for a week or so it was swollen and there were big painful lumps everywhere they injected me. i am going to the dentist again now for more work and i am at a different office with a new doctor and i told him and he said he would either use lidocaine or another one i cant remember the name of it i think he said act-o-caine not sure how it is spelled wondering if i could be allergic to either of those so anyone who actually knows what they are talking about i would greatly appreciate your words of wisdom and if you dont have a clue please don't comment thank you

It is possible that you're allergic. Watch for adverse reactions this time, as well, and what medication(s) are used. You may be allergic to simply Novocaine, or you could be allergic to the entire -caine family.

Also, make sure you tell your dentist about previous reactions and concerns.
