My dentist gave me antibiotics for my abscess.?!

Question: My dentist gave me antibiotics for my abscess.?
Basically, I have an abscess. My face is all swollen and my tooth is really sore but the abscess is right under my tooth and it isn't surfacing in my mouth. I went to the dentist today and they've given me a course of amoxicillan and told me they'll take the tooth out once the infection has gone. What I want to know is...once the antibiotics start to work, will the pain and swelling go away? I've read online of dentists 'draining' the abscess but my dentist didn't mention this to me today. I also read somewhere that the anitbiotics wont get rid of the pus? So I'm a bit confused at to what the amoxicillan is supposed to be doing?
I can't put any pressure on the tooth, therefore, can't eat anything but soup and I'm in constant pain. Will the antibiotics clear this up or will I be in pain and swollen until I get the tooth out?

Answers:

The antibiotics calm the infection down which is present in your body no matter where such as your mouth, ear, throat and Amoxycillin is most widely used, when the tooth is taken out then the pus comes away. It is similar to taking the cork out of a bottle. The tooth would only be drained if it was able to be saved and not being extracted ot the tooth had been taken out and you had a post op infection. You cannot extract a tooth if there is an active infection as the gum wont numb up , the local anaesthetic injected into the gum restricts the blood supply and nerves and infections stops this. Pain can be controlled by combining paracetamol 2x500mg along with ibuprofen 2x400mg or co codamol. Both work well together to combat the pain and swelling and with anti biotics it will help. The antibiotics take around 1-2 days to kick in so dont expect immediate relief.

I am a dental nurse in UK

when you get your teeth pulled, be SURE to ask your surgeon about your sinus passages..make SURE he understands that you know about them!!
Im getting mine done this week and my biggest concern is ive had 3 friends who got sinus drainage and had to have MAJOR surgery to repair it !! After that happened to them and i knew i was facing similar surgery,,,i GOOGLED it and its COMMON!!!! so be SURE if you have pain way up beside your nose that your surgeon KNOWS what he is doing! Take ALL your antibiotics......or it could come back good luck

there are chances of septicemia if they try to drain the pus without a prior dose of antibiotics.......once the infection is resolved, they will drain the pus.....
meanwhile, if the pain is unbearable, you can ask for analgesics....

The antibiotics keep you from getting a heart infection. When he pulls it, it might drain a little pus but the consolation prize is some really strong pain killers. You INSIST he send you home with some!

I had the same thing and the same antibiotic took it away, I didnt need it drained or anything like that.

I'll take a wild guess and say your dentist probably has more experience of this sort of thing than your typical YA answerer.

Hi abbie, I know how you feel.
This happened to my sister last week. The antibiotics will keep the infection down but she still had to take painkillers. Once the infection had gone the dentist was then able to numb the tooth and treat it.
I like many others have an adverse fear of the dentist which is due to a really frightening experience when I was a kid. I used to have sleepless nights and break out in cold sweats just thinking about it. That is until my friends told me about a youtube video which I related to and I got a hold of a Free Fear report which helped me to address my fear to take action.

I found a really sympathetic dentist who helped me step by step encouraging me to get the treatment I needed.

I no longer have teeth or gums problems and have got to the stage that seeing the dentist is just not such an ordeal now. This has also helped my friends and I can assure you that I was the dentist's worse patient. Not now and if you are truly phobic and afraid of the dentist get to see the video and the report is life changing.

Do not suffer any longer. Get your smile back.
All the best, and keep smiling ok?

Dear Abbie, Poor you! I have had many over the years and YES they do hurt! Amoxicillin is usually the first course of Antibiotics that I am prescribed but usually I have to try two more courses of different types before the pain and swelling settles down. (I'm sorry but I cannot remember the names of the other two). So don't worry if the first course doesn't work as apparently different antibiotics fight different infections. The pain and the swelling will disappear but you can take painkillers with your antibiotics. The pus will either dry up or if not root canal work can begin. Extraction should be the very last resort as it is not always needed. I have one now under my front tooth which is a crown and that abscess first occurred a couple of years ago when I had to have the crown fixed on again and the Dentist pressed on so hard he cracked my root in two. I've had several flare ups but now I'm waiting to have the root extracted because the crown is loose again and there is no way of securing it anymore. Try to keep your own teeth for as long as possible as nothing is ever the same. Good luck.
