Not necessarily! You may have a cavity, and contact with hot/cold and sweet will cause it to hurt.
Root canal usually meany that the nerve in the tooth is going bad.
unless you have a very deep cavity in it already, you probably just need to see the dentist, who can do an x-ray to check the nerve.
He can also clean out the cavity and put in a filling
In all probability YES... If the pain subsides within a second then a root canal wont be necessary, if it lingers on for a few seconds to minutes then YES root canal is necessary. Visit your dentist who will get an x-ray and guide you to a proper treatment.
