I have 4 of them on my front top teeth. I had them done in California and since insurance doesn't normally cover them, you'll most likely have to pay out of pocket. For me they were $1,200 each, but I've seen them as cheap as $800 in California or as much as $2,000. It varies but with that type of work, I'd make sure that you look at some pictures of past work the dentist has done. It's not worth it to go cheap if the dentist doesn't know what they're doing. I think around $900 on the westcoast is the average price, but the eastcoast is probably much cheaper on average. (I'm assuming you're in the USA).
As far as pain, they put shots in my gums and that was painful at first because of the quick little prick, but within seconds everything was numb and I didn't feel any pain throughout the drilling. How they do it is first they numb your mouth, shave your tooth down to a point, then they put a mold over your tooth and send it away to a lab so they can make the veneers. In the meantime, they give you a fake veneer to wear for about a week. Mine looked natural and I couldn't eat hard foods for a week while it was on, but nobody noticed it was fake or anything. After your real veneer is made, you go back to the dentist and he takes off the fake one and puts on the real one by bonding it to the tooth. The fake one was also bonded, so he breaks that off and puts the permanent one on.
The only painful part aside from the shots was after the tooth was shaved down, before they put the temporary and the permenent veneers on. The air in the room hit that tooth and since it was shaved down, there wasn't much enamel there to protect the nerves, so it hurt and I still felt it even though I was numbed.
