How do you tell the difference between a wisdom tooth 'cutting' and on!

Question: How do you tell the difference between a wisdom tooth 'cutting' and one that needs removed?
I have moderate to poor dental health (susceptible to cavities, stupid genetics) and the day before yesterday I woke with a bit of a sore mouth. It's a different hurt than the cavities have given, and the gum in the very back is slightly swollen. My wisdom tooth on that side already cut through a while ago (over a year, I think) but hasn't gone past just the tiniest bit. I've heard how awful it will feel if the wisdom teeth are impacted, and last time I was at the dentist, I was told they were coming in fine (aside from one being 'missing') but I know I have a high pain tolerance, so my 'not bad' is others 'omg get this thing outta my mouth!'

So
1: How do I tell?
2: How do I ease the annoying pain?

Answers:

Wisdom teeth can take AGES to come through and don't always come through at once

Top left - completely out.
Bottom right - cutting through (ack!)
Top right - present but not cutting
Bottom left - absent

You should be able to feel the tips of the molar through the gum, or see them if it's cutting - they will be much paler than the surrounding gum - if you can feel four and they are completely clear of the tooth in front, I doubt there is a problem.

If it's been more than a few months since your last visit and you're very worried, I would say go again.

As for the pain... teething gel! It's the same process.

All wisdom teeth need to be removed. They will cause your other teeth to get crooked.
