Removable Retainer Question?!

Question: Removable Retainer Question?
I got lazy with my retainer and stopped wearing it for about a month. My bottom teeth have shifted a bit. If I start wearing my retainer again, will they move back in place?
My retainer fits on perfectly, but is super tight, if that helps any.

Answers:

Yes, your retainer can move your teeth back into place. That "super tight" feeling you describe is basically your retainer applying forces to your teeth to get them back where they were when your retainer fit. If you can seat the retainer fully and wear it consistently, it will correct the alignment of your teeth to some degree. Your best bet? Before you go to bed tonight, put your retainer in and then begin wearing it full-time (except at meals). You will be pretty sore at first, but that will decrease as your teeth shift closer to their corrected alignment. After a few weeks of consistent wear, head back to your orthodontist for a retainer check appointment. He/she may be able to make adjustments that will correct your teeth even further, and then get you to the point where you can wear it nightly again to maintain your smile. The longer you wait to begin wearing your retainer again, the more you risk that your teeth will get to the point where no correction is possible without braces.

I'm an orthodontist. D.M.D., M.S.

Yes they will move back...but only for the period of time that you actually wear your retainer. Personally I found the thought of being 50 years old and still wearing a retainer stupid. And although I'm not 50 yet, I'm only 38, I gave up my retainer way back in my college years when I decided that I should just be happy with what I am- I understand your parents probably had good intentions but I do think that MOST orthodontics are scam artists, because I have NEVER met anyone who wore retainers more than a few years and after you stop wearing them your teeth will go back to what they were. And although they may not be as crooked as when you first started- they won't be perfect either.

They may still move a little, it depends how far they shifted. You could go back to your orthodontist and get you retainer adjusted to fit the new position of your teeth.

No. Your screwed. All that money gone to waste.
