Does getting cavities drilled hurt?!

Question: Does getting cavities drilled hurt?
DENTIST PROS HELP, RECENT DENTIST GOERS HELP.

Alright, the question really is, does it STILL hurt? This is just so it's easier for people to find your answer when they use Google to find out themselves.

Alright, sure I have already searched this question and gone through many different answers. Mostly all of them, to my surprise, say it doesn't hurt anymore to get cavities drilled or filled (or fillings).

I want people to answer me, with my case, because I pretty much have a phobia of the dentist. Here is my deal...

I am 16, I haven't been to the dentist in about 4 or something years. Or at least since I got my braces on, which may even be longer. Before then, when I regularly went for a cleaning every 6 months, I would usually have cavities. I guess I have very susceptible teeth, or I just plain suck at keeping them clean.

When I got my cavities filled (drilled, or whatever the technical term is,) they were INCREDIBLY PAINFUL. Sure, my dentist rubbed on the numbing stuff first, then he injected me with Novocaine I believe (supposedly it's outdated now, please clarify) which felt like a burning sensation usually every time until that entire area went numb.

But the fillings still hurt, a lot, so so so so much pain. I have had 4 teeth pulled in one sitting, and I think the fillings are still worse. I would usually grip the chair with such a death grip as if to tear holes through it.

This has left me incredibly afraid or traumatized by the dentist. I have to get 3 cavities filled on the 20th, I am almost hysterical over the thought of going back after such a peaceful time without dentists.

I now have a new dentist, I don't know what current dentistry (after something of like 4 years) is like.

Does it still hurt like hell? Can I be put to sleep or something? I know what the laughing gas, honestly, I don't know if it ever has helped.

I live in New Jersey...(slightly helpful info ftw?) Thank you in advance, and when I reply to your answer or something....after the 20th.

Depends on the Dentist.Yes they can put you to sleep. It still hurts like hell if the Dentist doesn't know what he/she is doing. The needle that numbs the area always hurts even if they do use the numbing stuff.

Of coursee not~~~~ Kidoo,, They'll numb you up first.. that may be a little painful but it won't hurt after a cupl of seconddds.~~~ TRUST Me <3

Mehh(:

Dont worry :) these days dentists i've learned have made it a lot more easier for patients to avoid pain...I can totally relate to ur problem tho..I definitely have a fear of the dentist too! haha I need extremely badly to get braces soon so I'm super nervous about the pain :( I don't know why they scare me so much, I guess im just afraid to show my teeth, because my teeth are definitely not the best feature about me and of course the pain scared me too...it scares me so much that last year when I learned that I had to get a tooth pulled because it wouldn't come down I started crying.. i have no idea why but you get through it as long as you stay strong and think about how nice your teeth will be in the end :) and I dont remember the dentist injecting novocaine into me when I got cavitites filled or drilled..so i dont think that should happen
