white marks because scratched teeth?!

Question: White marks because scratched teeth?
my friend that i known for years has white marks on his teeth (looks like white scratches) when i finally asked him he said it was because when he was little to try and get white teeth he took a sharp knife and scratched his teeth with it to make them look white...the result was that he has white looking scratches on parts of his teeth.

can you really do that? get white scratches on your teeth because of a sharp object?

If the teeth he scratched as child were already his adult teeth then yes the white lines you see on his teeth could have been caused by the trauma he introduced to the teeth by scratching them. If the teeth he scratched were baby teeth then the answer is no, and his now adult teeth have the white streaks because they were formed that way during development. When teeth erupt there may be small (or large) white spots on the teeth. These spots formed during development are called Enamel Hypoplasia or Hypocalcification. The defects in the teeth can be milky white, yellow or brown in color. Sometimes the Enamel, or outer layer of the tooth is even deformed or thin in places. These white or yellow spots are very common. You would be surprised how many people have some kind of discolouration. Again, very common.

Hypoplasia can be either a distinct spot on one tooth (sometimes called Turner's tooth, which might have been caused by a trauma or other unknown disturbance to the area during the mineralization of that tooth).
