Evryone with orhtodontic braces DO NOT have to wear the retainer for life. The basic purpose of the retainer is to maintain the achieved tooth position. It can be either fixed or removable plate. The time duration depends on the complexity of the treatment. Commonly it is advised for a period of six months. However some do require the need for a permanent retainer that is when the retainer is fixed to the teeth (small wire running across the teeth on their back surface. It is not visible outside). Your orthodontist is the best judge on what type and duration of the retainer you have to wear. Do follow his instructions to the core, else the teeth might drift back to its original position.

Yes, you will need to wear the retainer everyday for life. Every day you do not wear the retainer your teeth will shift. Its just natural that they shift. The retainer will keep them in perfect place. So wearing the retainer 8 hrs a day (usually during sleeping hours) will prevent shifting. 1 time not wearing it will cause shifting. You will know too because the retainer will be tight!! Its just part of having braces and having pretty teeth :)
