I've recently started flossing.. Is it normal for this to happen?!

Question: I've recently started flossing.. Is it normal for this to happen?
Recently, I've started flossing. I've only done it about 4 times now, and my gums are a little swollen between my teeth. They weren't swollen until I started flossing. I was wondering, is this a normal happening if you've JUST started flossing? Or should i be worried?

Answers:

It's normal. Flossing abrades the gums a bit and increases blood flow. Your immune system has moved in to help clear the infection it can now reach. Keep flossing and your gums should become smooth and pale pink. That's a sign that they are healthy. If any area gets more inflamed and swells significantly, your dentist may need to do a deeper cleaning. Good job starting flossing. You'll get used to having a much cleaner mouth and it will become a daily routine.

Used to work for a dentist.

Yes, gums are in a sense like a muscle. When you dont work them, they get weak and will be more sensitive. After awhile your gums should toughen up and you shouldn't see any negative signs after flossing, except maybe jealousy of how good they look ;)
