Big tooth filling broke off, how long can I wait?!

Question: Big tooth filling broke off, how long can I wait?
My molar tooth is shaped like a U and the middle and the back part is filled with this gray filling. I got it done 2 years ago and doctor said since its a huge piece of filling, if it breaks, I would have to get a root canal. Well, half of it broke off today after eating. Can't they just scrape it off and do it again since it lasted for so long? Why did the doctor say root canal? Did he mean crown it and I just heard wrong? If you are dental assistant or doctor, please let me know so I can get it straight with the doc on Monday. Thank you!

ps - If this information helps, it does not hurt. It never hurt before and doesn't hurt after it broke off. Thank you!

Answers:

Sounds like he should have meant crown, not root canal. If there is not cavity under it, that is not at all an indication for a root canal. When a tooth becomes more filling than tooth, that is often when a crown can make sense to hold it all together. Of course I would need to see it to make a good recommendation but ask your dentist and he should give you good advice as what to do.

I'm a dentist

I'm a regular person- I don't think dentists actually ever come here.

but anyways you definitely want to go get a new one IMMEDIATLY. the reason you might have to get a root canal is if the center, root, core, of your tooth is exposed. that would hurt a BUNCH and if the root get's damaged your tooth can die. if that happens it will start to decay and that's just nasty. but I'd have hope that you can just get a new cap-clay-stuff

I am not a dental assistant or doctor but I had the same problem a year ago, my dentist kept pushing for root canal even though it didn't hurt. Your tooth can however decay, get a lot of food stuck in there, it could get worse.

Just so you know, I opted for a removal of the molar, the reason being - though the chance of a root canal not being successful is very rare, it could still happen. More bacteria could get into the blood stream and there is nothing worse than doing a root canal twice! I cannot give you any informed suggestions but do research before making a decision.

Good luck!
