My boyfriend has terrible teeth. I am worried. Any advice?!

Question: My boyfriend has terrible teeth. I am worried. Any advice?
My boyfriend is finally going to the dentist after not going for 4 years. He has terrible teeth... one of his front teeth, the side of it has actually turned black.... what does THAT mean? Is that even fixable..? I mean I know its obviously like rotted tooth, but is that by any means normal? ALSO...one of his back teeth has a huge hole in the side... yes, a HOLE. It was so shocking to see for the first time. I don't know about any of you, but my teeth are really really good, and I've not seen teeth in such bad shape before. Other than the 2 I described I think the others are in tact. I think. But from the sound of it, what kind of situation is he looking at? Loosing any teeth with black areas? and holes?

Yes they can fix it. The hole is a cavity.
And the black tooth would be rotted out. Probably root canal. I had braces for two years and where one of my bands was I wasn't able to brush my tooth good enough and my tooth rotted. They file that rotten tooth down and place a cap that is closest to his other tooth colors over so it blends it. It will be as good as new!
:D

it's usually fixable.. he has cavities and most likely he has more than the ones you can see. ( most can only be seen in xrays) hope he has dental insurance because fillings are not cheap!

These days, they can pretty much fix anything.

Tough to say without looking at them. The front one will probably just be a filling but possibly root canal. Back one if the hole is large enough could be root canal but probably just filling if he hasn't had pain. By the way, cavities are caused by different strains of bacteria in the mouth. Kissing someone with bad cavities actually puts you at higher risk of cavities because he may have worse strains of bacteria and definitely a lot more of them than you do; no joke. These are passed into your mouth. Children are most frequently first infected by their mothers so if mom has bad teeth, the child can as well. So tell him to clean up his nasty mouth, snack on sugars less, and brush better.

I'm a dentist
