tooth infection not being cleared up by antibiotics?!

Question: Tooth infection not being cleared up by antibiotics?
I have been on antibiotics (amoxicillin) for a week now, and the pain seems to be getting worse not better. I have to take way too many painkillers to stop myself going insane. I know this isn't healthy, but I was wondering if I am doing something wrong thats preventing the antibiotics from working. I haven't stopped drinking coca cola or eating what I normally eat, but it doesn't say to change your diet. I'm seriously thinking I need A&E as I can't sleep for more than two hours when the painkillers wear off.

I was a dental assistant in regular dental and in oral surgery. I suggest the following:
#1. Antibiotics given for infection in the mouth should be taken 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal. That is the standard for a sever infection or any infection in the mouth.
#2. You should have been given ibuprofen 800 mg to reduce the swelling that the infection causes. The dentist that I worked for NEVER gave anything stronger for pain. The reason being that pain comes from swelling caused by the infection. They always preSpeaked 800 mg 3x day. Speak to your dentist about this.
#3. Amoxicillin is ususally the best one, but if you were not taking it around the clock, then you will have to have it changed to a stonger one. Remember that it is IMPORTANT, if it says to take 1 3x day, then YOU MUST TAKE IT EVERY 8 HOURS! That way you keep it in your system. If you fail to do that you only prolong the agony.
Call ;your dentist and good luck.

hey i guess u should visit ur dentist , may be the antibiotics need to be changed,, if u get it once checked up the dentist may change the medicines and its better than u suffering with so much pain cos i know how painful and unbearable toothache is ,, my dad was on many antibiotics too but his pain was only getin worse so he went to the dentist again , the dentist changed the medicines and just cleaned his tooth a little ,, so go visit ur dentist soon and pain doesn increase by drinkng cola but ya try avoiding sweets ,,, hope ur pain goes soon

Call your doctor. Your infection must have immunity to amoxicillin and you need to be on a different antibiotic. Your doc/dentist will give you a different type. If the amoxicillin ha worked, you'd have started feeling better after maybe 4 days.
