Are you happy with your yellow teeth? Well certainly you do! No one wants a dull uninteresting smile! Those movie stars on tv are always complaining about wanting better brighter smiles even though they already glow. The good news is that the brightness of your smile is almost entirely within your control. While heredity does come into play a little bit here, for the most part, having a white smile depends on your lifestyle choices: what you eat, drink and other habits you may or may not have. In this answer you will learn some techniques that you can start using today!

The simplest method for getting a whiter smile is to have it done professionally by your dentist. The dentist has products and treatments that you can only get from him that will really whiten your smile by a few shades. If you are very upset about stains or damage, a professional session of teeth whitening can aid in changing the impact of the discoloration. For a lot of people this is a good choice because it is fast, efficient and durable. In oral care, hydrogen peroxide is used quite often. This is the stuff that comes in the brown bottle, not the clear bottle. Hydrogen peroxide has many uses in the home including for the cleaning and sterilization of wounds. By mixing hydrogen peroxide and water in equal parts you get an excellent mouthwash that is fabulous in fighting cavities and reducing infection. If you brush it on your teeth it does wonders to whiten them. You have to pay special attention that you don't swallow the solution and that you got the quantities right of hydrogen peroxide and water. Wash your mouth out well after using it. This stuff is great for killing infections and whitening teeth but it will wreak havoc on your internal system.

If at all possible, always drink plenty of water. Water will help to get rid of any left over food that may have been left from meals or from snacks. You will also find the benefit of being more hydrated. It's best to drink water over all other beverages, including tea, coffee, juice and soda. This will only make you healthier. That's not to mention the fact that there is zero chance that water will stain your teeth, which can't be said for most of those other beverages. The more water you take in, the more those stains from all those dark drinks will disappear. Nobody wants to have a discolored or stained smile. Thankfully there are a lot of things that you can do to make your smile pretty again. No one should be ashamed to smile ear to ear. You can employ the teeth whitening ideas in this answer immediately. With a little research you will surely find many more ideas that you can implement to help you recover your bright, white smile. The great thing is that you can fix staining and discoloring. Be prepared to proudly show the world your teeth!

You can use a whitening toothpaste, gels, varnish, or strips. Look for the ingredient hydrogen peroxide (be sure to look at the percent of hydrogen peroxide - the more, the better whitening power). But, be sure you try not to drink coffee, smoke, or drink wine for 48 hours after using these products, because it may hamper your efforts! Your dentist can offer better treatments. Some stains are not removable though (like fluorosis and tetracycline staining). If your teeth get sensitive (mine always do after using whitening toothpastes) use Sensodyne toothpaste....it'll get rid of that sensitivity.

And somone answered that whitening products are abrasive (a dental hygeinist?? LOL Really?). They actually are completely safe and not abrasive unless you are using professional grade (dentist office only) whiteneres excessively. Abrasion is caused by brushing too hard or other problems such as bruxism... The way to combat the sensitivity issue is with snesitivity toothpastes. OTC (over the counter) whiteneners are TOTALLY safe!

Crest White Strips. Brush with a very abrasive solution, like baking soda and peroxide caked on your toothbrush. as a dental hygienist I have to warn you that too much of this abrasive brushing can harm your teeth and your gums, but a little here and there (like, once a month) can not really do anything bad. The abrasiveness will scrub any stain or buildup you have off of your teeth.

Holding a strip of lemon peel behind your lips against your teeth works really well for me. Or just a lemon juice rinse, but always use it before you brush because the lemon juice can erode your enamel if you don't brush it back off. Peroxide and water rinse before you brush your teeth works good too, but always dilute it. It's not good to use it full strength.

Tips from my dentist.

There are some suggested home remedies for teeth whitening, but do be careful since most of them damage the teeth , the main reason being mis-application.

Whitening Teeth with Lemon Juice
Whitening Teeth with Wood Ash
Whitening Teeth with Strawberries
Whitening Teeth with Baking Soda
Brushing Teeth with Sea Salt
Whitening Teeth with Olive Oil
Whitening Teeth with Raisins
