I have just received a letter saying that the appointment I was referred for is to see the oral surgeon, but it is also an anxiety management clinic... What is this? I've never even heard of this before!

Perhaps another word for sedation dentistry to help you cope with the referral. Less rush and more time to explain and talk you through the treatment perhaps. Relaxation techniques is another possibility.
Did you suffer from high anxiety levels when your own dentist tried to treat you?
This will have been mentioned in the referral letter that he wrote to the hospital. Either way it looks as if they are going to accommodate your fears.
